There once was a beautiful parrot trapped in a cage by her master, a merchant. The merchant made many trips to lands near and far, and one day decided to travel to India, where the finest goods were made.
He asked all his servants what he should buy for them on his journey, and each listed things that their heart desired most. When he then asked his parrot what she would like, the bird responded:
When you see the parrots there,
please tell them all about my sad affair.
Tell them a parrot pines continually
To see you, but she’s caged by fate’s decree;
She sends her greetings and asks for justice,
She wants to learn the faith you parrots practice
Should I stay in this cage — can this be right,
While in the woods and meadows you take flight?
My noble friends, remember this poor bird
And drink to me tomorrow — spread the word.
